Laserburn

Modern Conquest and War Games

Laserburn is a tabletop miniatures wargame ruleset for science fiction combat, designed by Bryan Ansell and published by Tabletop Games in 1980 for use with metal figures at fifteen millimeter scale, though it can also be played with twenty five millimeter miniatures. Its setting imagines a distant future in which humanity has reached the stars and the height of advanced technology while simultaneously sliding back toward barbarism, and games are fought out as small-unit skirmishes between opposing forces of figures on a tabletop battlefield using the rules' movement, weapons and combat resolution systems. Laserburn holds a notable place in wargaming history because several of its ideas, including power armor, heavier dreadnought-style armor, bolt guns and jet-propelled cycles, were carried forward by Bryan Ansell into Warhammer 40,000 after he began working with Games Workshop in the late 1980s, making Laserburn a direct ancestor of one of the best-known science fiction miniatures games ever published.
