Ladder toss is a lawn game in which players throw bolas, two balls joined by a length of string, at a free-standing ladder with three rungs. Each rung carries a different point value, commonly one, two and three points, and players or teams alternate throws from a set line, aiming to reach exactly 21 points without going over. A Pennsylvania postal worker named Robert G. Reid patented a ball and ladder game in 2002, after having played a version of it with his family for decades, and the game is reported to have begun appearing on campgrounds in the late 1990s.
