La-Trel is an abstract strategy game for two players, dated 1994 by its Board Game Matcher listing and credited to Richard K Morgan. It mixes ideas from chess and checkers. Each side has four kinds of piece: Defenders, Sabers, Tridents and Warriors. Warriors may move in any direction, like the queen in chess, Sabers move only along ranks and files, like rooks, and Tridents move only diagonally, like bishops. Defenders cannot capture but are used to block or confuse the opponent. Pieces are captured in the manner of checkers, by being jumped over, with special rules for captures in corners and for substituting one piece for another. The listing calls it an unusual combination of two classic games and estimates about an hour of play.
