Japanese mahjong, also called riichi mahjong, is a variant of mahjong that shares the basic rules of other mahjong variants but adds its own distinctive rules. Riichi is a declaration that a hand will win without being altered further, and dora are randomly selected tiles that score bonus points. It is one of the few styles in which discarded tiles are kept in order rather than in a disorganized pile, mainly because the furiten rule takes a players own discards into account. The variant has grown in popularity thanks to anime, manga and online platforms. Its Japanese name is written with the characters for mahjong and is read Majan.
