Isolo

Mancala Games

Isolo is a four-row mancala-style board game played by the Sukuma people of Tanzania, and the Ludii portal notes that it is typically played by boys. The board has four rows of eight holes with two counters in each hole at the start. Players sow counters anti-clockwise, and when the final counter of a sowing lands in an occupied hole of the sower's inner row, the opponent's opposite holes in the inner and outer rows are captured and sown into the sower's own holes. The game has an initial phase in which the rightmost holes of the inner and outer rows are out of play, and a second phase that begins when a player first plays from the rightmost hole of the outer row. Play continues until one player can no longer move.
