Ingenious (board game)

Alignment and Abstract Strategy Games

Ingenious is the English-language name for Einfach Genial, or Simply Ingenious, a German-style abstract strategy board game designed by Reiner Knizia under commission from Sophisticated Games and first published in 2004 by Kosmos. Players take turns placing domino-shaped tiles, each printed with two colored symbols, onto a hexagonal grid so that matching symbols line up in unbroken rows, scoring points in each of six separate colors as they do. The game's defining rule is that a player's final score is determined not by their total across all six colors but by whichever single color they scored lowest in, which forces careful, balanced play across every color rather than allowing a player to win by excelling in just one area, and that constraint has made the game a frequently cited example of elegant modern abstract design.
