Highlander: The Card Game

Highlander: The Card Game is a collectible card game released in March 1995 and produced across its run by La Montagnard Inc, SAEC Games and Thunder Castle Games. The game draws its theme and characters from the Highlander franchise of films and television series, casting players as Immortals who battle one another using cards representing weapons, powers and allies drawn from that fictional world. A player wins a duel when the opponent is reduced to zero ability or cannot avoid a headshot attack, since beheading is, within the Highlander franchise's own internal logic, the only way to permanently kill an Immortal. That win condition ties the game's mechanics directly to the source material's central premise, in which Immortals can survive nearly any wound except decapitation and must eventually face one another until only one remains. Highlander: The Card Game arrived during the wider 1990s boom in collectible card games that followed the early success of Magic: The Gathering, and it is one of several licensed entries from that period that tried to translate an existing film or television property into the collectible card format.
