Gods and Generals is a 2003 first-person shooter developed by AniVision and published by Activision Value exclusively for Microsoft Windows, released March 1, 2003. Based on the film of the same name, it places the player as a soldier in the American Civil War who can choose to fight for either the Union or the Confederacy across a nine part campaign that incorporates scenes drawn from the film. Missions range from raids and reconnaissance to commanding a full company of troops in large scale battles, including refights of the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Chancellorsville and the Battle of Fredericksburg, using period weapons such as muskets, revolvers and sabers. Despite its ambitious historical scope, the game was critically panned on release, with reviewers criticizing its execution relative to its subject matter.
