Gobblet

Board game

Gobblet is a two-player abstract strategy board game designed by Thierry Denoual and published in 2001 by Gigamic and Blue Orange Games. Play takes place on a four-by-four grid where each side controls twelve pieces in three graduated sizes; a larger piece can be placed over a smaller one already on the board, temporarily hiding it, and pieces already in play may be picked up and moved again instead of only added from reserve. A player wins by lining up four of their own pieces in a row, column or diagonal, and the option to cover an opponent's piece or unstack one of your own adds a layer of bluffing absent from plain tic-tac-toe. The game was a finalist for the 2004 Jeu de l'Annee award and later spawned a smaller Gobblet Junior edition and 2009 revisions called Gobblet X4 and Gobblet Gobblers.
