GNU Chess is a free and open-source chess engine and command-line chessboard interface first released in 1984 under the GNU Project. It was one of the earliest computer chess programs distributed with full source code available and is among the oldest chess programs still maintained for Unix-family operating systems. Intended as a basis for research as well as play, GNU Chess has been used across numerous academic and hobbyist contexts over its four-decade history, and runs today on Linux, Unix, macOS, and Windows. It has been licensed under the GPL, moving from GPL-2.0-or-later to GPL-3.0-or-later in 2010, and continues to receive maintenance releases from collaborative developers, with version 6.3.0 issued in August 2025.
