Game
Gilet (card game)
Card game
Gilet is a gambling card game of sixteenth-century Italian origin that scholars believe predates and may have influenced the related game Primero, played by two to four players with a thirty-two card Italian-pattern Piquet deck running from seven up to the ace. Each player antes counters into a central pot and is dealt three cards, and play then unfolds across two separate betting rounds built around different hand values: the first round is contested for Ge, meaning matched pairs, with three of a kind, called tricon, ranking as the best possible hand in that round, and the winner of that round carries play forward into a second pot decided by Point or Flow, a hand of three cards sharing the same suit. Hand strength in the counting rounds depends on card point values, with aces worth eleven and the court cards worth ten each, rewarding players who can weigh those values against their opponents' bets across the game's several phases.
