Gettysburg (game)

Historical wargame

Gettysburg is a board wargame created by Charles S. Roberts and published by his company Avalon Hill in 1958, recreating the American Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg for two players. Roberts chose the subject in part because of the approaching Civil War centennial, and the game is regarded as the first modern historical wargame, introducing mechanics such as unit facing and flanking bonuses that influenced the wargaming hobby for decades afterward. Play typically takes several hours after a setup period of about fifteen minutes, and the game rewards careful tactical and strategic planning over chance. Gettysburg became a commercial bestseller for Avalon Hill and was revised across several editions during its long publication history.
