Game of the Amazons
Board game
The Game of the Amazons, known in Spanish as El Juego de las Amazonas and often shortened to Amazons, is a two-player abstract strategy game invented in 1988 by Walter Zamkauskas of Argentina. It is played on a ten by ten board, the same size as an international checkers board or a standard chessboard, with each player controlling four queen-like pieces called amazons. On a turn a player moves one amazon like a chess queen and then shoots an arrow from that piece's new position along another queen-like line, permanently blocking the square it lands on so no piece may ever cross or land there again. Play continues until one player has no legal move remaining, at which point that player loses, so the game gradually reduces the board into ever smaller playable territory as it progresses.
