Fantasy baseball

Fantasy baseball is a participatory sports game in which competitors act as owners and general managers of imaginary baseball teams, assembling rosters through a draft in which real Major League Baseball players are available, most commonly, though leagues can also draw on college baseball or overseas leagues such as the KBO League. Team success is scored according to those players' actual statistical performance in real games, so a fantasy team's fortunes rise and fall with the real athletes on its roster rather than any simulated outcome. The modern format traces its origins to Rotisserie League Baseball, created in 1980 by magazine writer and editor Daniel Okrent together with a group of fellow journalists who met for lunch at a New York City restaurant called La Rotisserie Francaise, from which the alternate name Rotisserie baseball derives; Okrent is credited with introducing the concept and developing its scoring system. The format's growth alongside the internet and dedicated statistics providers made it one of the founding pillars of the broader fantasy sports industry.
