Escalado is a horse racing game created in the United Kingdom in which model racehorse pieces, originally made of lead, travel down a long green fabric race track toward a finish line at the far end. The horses advance along the track by means of a mechanical hand crank that vibrates the entire track in a random fashion, simulating the unpredictable movement of a live race. Escalado was invented and patented in 1928 by the Swiss inventor Arthur Gueydan and was produced by the United Kingdom toy company Chad Valley. It is played by two or more players, who typically wager or predict which horse will win, drawing on social interaction as much as on the game's built-in randomness, since no player has direct control over how far any horse advances on a given turn.
