Epic is a collective term for a series of tabletop miniature wargames produced by Games Workshop and set in the fictional Warhammer 40,000 universe. Designed by Jervis Johnson and Andy Chambers and first released in 1988, the system uses miniatures roughly 6 millimeters tall, far smaller than the 28 millimeter figures of standard Warhammer 40,000, so that a single game can represent battles between armies of hundreds of soldiers, dozens of tanks and giant walking war machines called Titans. Where its parent game depicts small skirmishes of a few squads and a handful of vehicles, Epic is built around large scale combined arms warfare on a tabletop. The system has been revised across five major editions since its debut, with the most recent version released as Legions Imperialis in 2023, and games are typically played by two or more participants over sessions ranging from about thirty minutes to three hours.
