Entdecker

Entdecker, German for discoverer, is a tile laying board game designed by Klaus Teuber, the creator of The Settlers of Catan, and first published in 1996 by the German company Goldsieber. Players begin with an empty grid and gradually build it outward by placing numbered tiles and steering ship counters across the growing map, revealing islands as connected groups of tiles come together. Once an island is completed, the players who explored it can send expedition teams ashore to claim resources and score points, rewarding those who time their landings well rather than simply exploring the most territory. Despite winning the silver Deutscher Spiele Preis in 1996, the original edition disappointed some players and reviewers who had expected a worthy successor to Teuber's earlier hit. Goldsieber's successor company Kosmos revised the design in 2001 as Die Neuen Entdecker, later released in English by Mayfair Games as Entdecker: Exploring New Horizons, and that reworked edition went on to win the Essen Feather award the same year.
