Enochian chess is a four-player chess variant, similar to chaturaji, associated with the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The name comes from the Enochian system of magic of Dr. John Dee, the magus and astrologer to Elizabeth I, which Victorian members of the Golden Dawn later adapted into a complete system of training and initiation. The game is therefore both a member of the chess family and a part of the ritual and occult practice of that order, played by four people rather than the two of ordinary chess.
