En Garde! (role-playing game)

Role-Playing Games

En Garde! is a hybrid role-playing and tactical dueling game published by Game Designers' Workshop in 1975. It simulates the swashbuckling world of the Three Musketeers and Cyrano de Bergerac in seventeenth century Paris. Designed by Darryl Hany, Frank Chadwick and Paul Evans and issued as a 48-page digest-sized book, it was the company's first entry into the role-playing game field. Appearing only a year after Dungeons & Dragons, it was one of that game's earliest competing products. A revised second edition followed in 1977. Reviewers liked the setting, but the rules drew criticism, since duels often ended swiftly. The game found a long second life as a play-by-mail game, and a fourth edition was later produced by Margam Evans. It has no connection to the 1987 Swedish role-playing game of the same title.
