Empire of the Petal Throne

Role-Playing Games

Empire of the Petal Throne is a fantasy role-playing game designed by M. A. R. Barker and based on his Tekumel fictional universe. It was self-published in 1974 and then published by TSR in 1975. It was one of the first tabletop role-playing games, appearing alongside Dungeons & Dragons, and it was the first published role-playing game setting. Over the following thirty years several further games were published for the Tekumel setting, though none has met with commercial success. Although it was published as fantasy, the game is sometimes classified as science fantasy or, more debatably, as science fiction.
