Dominoes is a tile game played with rectangular tiles marked with pips on two ends, matching tiles end to end by shared values to build a chain, most commonly with a double six set of twenty eight tiles in the modern Western form. Its lineage is contested and layered in the same way as backgammon own: tile matching games with pipped domino-like markings are documented in China from the Song dynasty, with a set called pupai recorded around 1120 AD, while the modern Western double six domino set is separately documented appearing in Italy in the eighteenth century, from where it spread to France and the rest of Europe. Whether, or how, the Chinese and Italian traditions connect across the intervening centuries is not documented and is debated among game historians, the same honest split used for backgammon.

Origin YearThe modern Western double six domino set is documented in Italy from around the early to mid eighteenth century, roughly 1750, from where it spread to France and the rest of Europe. Tile matching games using pipped markings are separately documented much earlier in China, with a set called pupai recorded around 1120 AD under the Song dynasty, but the line of transmission, if any, between the Chinese and later Italian traditions across the intervening six centuries is not documented and is debated among game historians.
