Dodgem is a simple abstract strategy game for two players, invented in 1972 by Colin Vout while he was a mathematics student at the University of Cambridge and described in the book Winning Ways. It is played on an n by n board on which each player has n minus one cars; a three-by-three board with two cars each is enough for an interesting game, though larger boards are possible. One player starts with blue cars along the left edge and moves them forward to the right or sideways up and down, while the other starts with red cars along the bottom edge and moves them forward up or sideways left and right. Cars may leave the board only by a forward move, and there are no captures. A player must always leave the opponent a legal move or forfeit. The three-by-three game has been completely analysed and is a win for the first player.
