Defenders of the Realm

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Defenders of the Realm is a cooperative fantasy board game from 2010, designed by Richard Launius, for one to four players. Everyone plays together against the game itself: the heroes travel across a map of a threatened kingdom, fight the monster hordes that keep arriving, and try to stop them before they reach the king. Turns run on an action point system, and each hero carries a distinct set of abilities, so the makeup of the team matters as much as the choices made on the day. The tension builds because every enemy general the players defeat makes the remaining ones appear faster and hit harder, which shortens the time left to win. Players have to balance aggressive pushes against defensive scrambles, using dice rolls and a limited hand of cards. A session lasts about ninety minutes, and the game also works as a solo campaign.
