Dawn of the Dead (game)

Modern Conquest and War Games

Dawn of the Dead is a science fiction board wargame published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) in 1981, designed by John Butterfield with illustration by Butterfield and Redmond A. Simonsen. It is based on the 1978 zombie film Dawn of the Dead, and depicts a struggle between a small group of human survivors and a growing horde of the undead. The game is played by two players, one controlling the human survivors and the other controlling the zombies, and includes a solitaire option for playing the human side alone against the zombie horde's programmed behavior. As one of SPI's licensed genre wargames of the early 1980s, it applied the studio's hex-and-counter wargame mechanics to a horror film license rather than a historical conflict.
