Dark chess

Chess-Family War Games

Dark chess, also known as Fog of War chess, is a chess variant of incomplete information in the same spirit as Kriegspiel. It was devised in 1989 by Jens Baek Nielsen and Torben Osted. Each player sees only their own pieces and the squares those pieces can legally move to, together with any enemy pieces standing on such squares, and hidden squares are marked so they cannot be mistaken for empty ones. The aim is to capture the king rather than checkmate it, and a player is not told when the king is in check, so moving into or staying in check is legal. Castling is allowed out of, through and into attacked squares. The game is played mostly on online chess servers, where in September 2020 it was the most popular variant on Chess.com, though over-the-board play needs three sets and a referee.
