Chouine
Trick-Taking Card Game
Chouine is a very old French trick taking card game of the ace ten family, played by two players with a 32 card piquet pack. It remains actively played today in the Loire Valley, particularly in the north of Touraine, where it has seen a local resurgence in popularity in recent decades. Cards rank ace, ten, king, queen, jack, nine, eight, seven, with the ace and ten carrying the highest point values, a structure characteristic of ace ten trick taking games found across French and Central European card traditions. Chouine is closely related to, and is often described as a regional variant of, the point trick games Brisque and Briscan, sharing their basic scoring logic while carrying its own local rules and terminology specific to the Loire Valley communities that have kept it alive.
