Chinese Farm (board game)

Modern Conquest and War Games

Chinese Farm is a board wargame created by Simulations Publications Inc and released in 1975. It simulates operational-level ground combat between Egyptian and Israeli forces at the Battle of the Chinese Farm during the October 1973 Yom Kippur War. The game was originally distributed as part of a multi-game collection titled Modern Battles: Four Contemporary Conflicts before later being released on its own as a folio game in SPI's Modern Warfare series. The design was credited to Howard Barasch, with cartography and graphic design by Redmond A. Simonsen, SPI's longtime art director. The historical battle itself took its name from a misunderstanding: Israeli forces encountering Japanese-language markings on agricultural equipment at an Egyptian experimental farm mistook the characters for Chinese writing, and the name stuck to both the site and the later wargame depicting the fighting there.
