Carcassonne: The Castle

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Carcassonne: The Castle is a 2003 tile-placement game for exactly two players, designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and Reiner Knizia and issued by publishers including Hans im Glück, Rio Grande Games, 999 Games and Albi. It takes the tile-laying system of the original Carcassonne and compresses it into a duel played inside a circular wall. Players race their followers around the perimeter of the wall to claim bonus tiles, and those tiles change final scoring by doubling one structure type or rescuing points from unfinished constructions. Placing a tile can block the opponent or claim a courtyard first, which makes the game more confrontational than larger Carcassonne sets. It plays in about 45 minutes for ages eight and up, using area majority, end game bonuses and tile placement.
