Game
Britannia (board game)
Historical wargame
Britannia is a multiplayer strategy board game depicting waves of invasion and settlement across Great Britain from the Roman conquest through the Norman Conquest of 1066. Designed by Lewis Pulsipher, who had created an earlier version called Invasions in 1983, it was first published by Gibsons Games in the United Kingdom in 1986 and by The Avalon Hill Game Company in the United States in 1987, with a further edition from Fantasy Flight Games around 2008. Three to five players each control several successive tribes or nations, such as Romans, Saxons, Vikings and Normans, scoring points for the territory their peoples hold at fixed points in history. The game is credited with founding a subgenre of wargames built around epic historical time scales and multiple national roles per player, and it was later included in the anthology Hobby Games: The 100 Best.
