Black Lady

Trick-Taking Card Games

Black Lady is an American card game of the hearts group for three to six players, and the most popular game of that group. It emerged in the early 20th century as an elaboration of hearts and was at first also called discard hearts. It is named for its highest penalty card, the queen of spades, nicknamed the black lady. It is a trick-avoidance game in which the aim is to avoid taking tricks that contain hearts or the black lady. Ely Culbertson, the American author and bridge exponent, described it as essentially hearts with the queen of spades added as a minus card counting thirteen. In America it is often simply called hearts, and it is also known as American hearts, black widow and slippery Anne, and in Australia as rickety Kate.
