Belote

Trick-Taking Card Games

Belote is a 32-card, trick-taking game for four players that is popular in France, where it is considered the national card game and is played both casually and for gambling. It belongs to the jass family of games, which are characterized by the jack and nine of trumps being the strongest trump cards. The game appeared around 1900 in France and is a close relative of both Klaberjass, also known as bela, and klaverjas. Closely related games are played throughout the world, including similar games in central Europe, baloot in Saudi Arabia and pilotta in Cyprus. Within the game's terminology, belote also names the pair of a king and a queen of the trump suit, which may be the origin of the game's name. Its definitive rules were first published in French in 1921.
