Deduction and Guessing Games

Battleship is a two-player guessing game in which each player secretly arranges a fleet of ships on a grid and then takes turns calling out grid coordinates to try to hit the opponent's hidden ships, sinking a ship once every square it occupies has been hit. The game is descended from pencil-and-paper guessing games played at least as early as the First World War, and it was first published as a commercial pad-and-pencil game in the 1930s before Milton Bradley released the now-familiar plastic grid-and-peg board edition in 1967. It remains one of the best-known pure deduction and guessing games.
