Avalanche: The Salerno Landings

Modern Conquest and War Games

Avalanche: The Salerno Landings is a board wargame published by Game Designers' Workshop in 1976 that simulates the nine day battle for the Salerno beachhead in September 1943, following the Allied amphibious assault known as Operation Avalanche. The game recreates the campaign at a tactical, company level scale, using a hexagonal map of the Salerno coastline and cardboard counters representing the Allied and German units that fought for the beachhead in the days after the landing. Two players take the Allied and German sides, managing the buildup of the beachhead against a determined German counterattack that nearly pushed the invasion back into the sea, giving the game its central historical tension between how quickly the Allies could reinforce and how hard the German army could counterattack before reinforcements arrived.
