Astronomical chess, also called Astrological chess, is a game for seven players that comes from the Libro de los Juegos (Book of Games), written under King Alfonso X the Wise in 1283. It was played on a round board made of concentric circles, and its elements are the sky, the zodiac signs and the planets. The book described games and problems of playing situations in chess, dice and other board games, material that formed the basis of modern backgammon. Some sources call it the Zodiac, and despite the name it is a dice game that has nothing to do with chess.
