A Mighty Fortress (wargame)

Modern Conquest and War Games

A Mighty Fortress is a board wargame published by Simulations Publications Inc in 1977, subtitled Reformation and Counter-Reformation 1532 to 1555. It simulates the religious and political conflict that spread across Europe during the sixteenth-century Reformation era. The game accommodates up to six players, each commanding one of the period's major powers: England, France, the Ottoman Empire, the Habsburgs, the Papacy, and the Lutheran princes. Play runs across twenty-four game turns, each representing one year of the historical period, during which players pursue territorial gains or the spread or suppression of the Reformation according to their faction's aims. As an SPI title from the mid-1970s, it belongs to the wave of multi-player historical simulation wargames the company produced covering political and religious conflicts rather than purely military campaigns.
