A Game of Thrones: The Board Game is a strategy board game designed by Christian T. Petersen and published by Fantasy Flight Games in 2003, based on George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Three to six players, or three to four with certain expansions, each take command of one of the Great Houses of Westeros and maneuver armies across a map of the Seven Kingdoms, seizing territory and besieging rival strongholds in pursuit of the Iron Throne. Its mechanics draw heavily on the classic negotiation and conquest game Diplomacy, layering in secret order writing, seasonal supply limits and a bidding track for special powers to add considerably more complexity. The game was well received on release and won three Origins Awards in 2004, and has since gone through further editions that refine its map and rules.
