1000 is an easy-to-learn card game for two or three players, and its simple rules make it a good way to learn the basic ideas of trick-taking and trump-based card games. The three-hand game uses a 24-card deck of French playing cards, ranked ace, ten, king, queen, jack and nine, with the tens promoted to second place. Each player receives eight cards. There is no trump suit at the start, and a suit becomes trumps when a player melds a king and queen of the same suit, which scores a bonus that differs by suit and obliges the melder to play one of the pair. The name is taken from the score at the end of the game: under the original scoring the first player to reach 1,001 points wins, while a simplified system divides the points by ten. Variants include Jungfrau, a bonus for taking no tricks, and 1001 with Bidding, which adds a Skat-style stock.
