Faro (card game)

Faro, also known as pharaon or pharaoh, is a card game of chance played between a banker and any number of players, in which participants bet on the order cards will be turned over from a dealing box. Originating in France in the late seventeenth century, it became one of the most widely played gambling games in Europe and North America through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, especially in the saloons and gambling halls of the American West, before declining in popularity in the early twentieth century as it was supplanted by other games.
