Halma is an abstract strategy board game invented in 1883 or 1884 by George Howard Monks, an American thoracic surgeon at Harvard Medical School, who drew on the earlier English game Hoppity, devised in 1854. It is played on a checkered board divided into 16 by 16 squares by two or four players, each using a set of small pieces such as checkers, counters, or wooden or plastic cones. Players win by moving every one of their own pieces out of their home camp and into the camp in the opposite corner of the board, moving a piece either one step to an adjacent square or in a jump over another piece in a single turn.
