1811 marks Friedrich Ludwig Jahn founding of the Turnverein movement and the Hasenheide outdoor gymnasium in Berlin, usually cited as the birth of gymnastics as a modern systematized sport. The name and general purpose trace to the ancient Greek gymnasion more than two thousand years earlier, but the two are related by name and inspiration rather than by direct continuous practice, so no single origin year covers both.

Wrestling, generally considered the oldest combat sport, is depicted in Mesopotamian and Egyptian art dating to around 3000 BC; the earliest known depiction of boxing is a Sumerian relief from the 3rd millennium BC. Named traditions carried as their own entities in this atlas codify far later and separately, for example Judo (1882) and Taekwondo (1955).

Its direct precursor, the Stoke Mandeville Games for wheelchair athletes, began in England in 1948, the same day as the London Olympics opening ceremony, so the founding of the movement is genuinely split between an origin as a rehabilitation sports event in 1948 and its codification as a parallel Games in 1960.

Undocumented earlier play is often claimed for around 1829 in New Orleans, and the game itself draws on older European games including the German Pochen and French Poque; a once common theory tracing poker to the Persian game As Nas is now regarded by several game historians as unsupported. No single origin date commands consensus.

Currently States Poker has no single global governing body with universal recognition. The International Federation of Match Poker (IFMP), founded 29 April 2009 in Lausanne, Switzerland, describes itself as the global governing body for Match Poker, a scored, chance-reduced tournament variant, and won provisional membership of the International Mind Sports Association in 2010; the World Series of Poker, poker's best known international championship, is run commercially rather than by any federation.

Multiple bodies have claimed a governing role for poker since the 2000s (the earlier International Poker Federation founded 2002, FIDPA founded 2007, and IFMP founded 2009 among them); IFMP is the one this wave could verify directly, by reading its own Wikipedia page, so it is the one cited. No source checked this wave shows any of these bodies holding the kind of near-universal recognition FIFA or FIDE hold in their sports.

Clear textual references to shogi in Japan date to around the sixteenth century, but archaeological finds, including shogi pieces excavated at Kofuku-ji temple in 1993 and dated to around the eleventh century, indicate an earlier and less standardized proto-shogi already existed. The game deepest ancestry traces to the Indian game chaturanga, but the route and timing by which chaturanga reached Japan, distinct from and far less documented than its westward transmission through Persia into chess, is debated among game historians.

The game itself is much older and undocumented in written rules: it developed informally from rackets at Harrow School around 1830, when a softer, punctured ball that squashed on wall impact produced a distinct, slower game, so squash's true beginning as an unwritten schoolboy pastime cannot be pinned to a single year.
