The Ryder Cup is a biennial men's golf match-play competition between teams representing the United States and Europe, twelve players a side, contested over three days for 28 total points, one per match won and a half each for a tie; the team with the most points wins, and the defending team retains the trophy if the match is tied. English businessman Samuel Ryder donated the trophy, and the first official match was played in 1927 at Worcester Country Club, Massachusetts, between the United States and Great Britain. Eligibility widened to Great Britain and Ireland in 1973 and to continental Europe in 1979, a change credited with making the contest far more competitive; Europe has won most of the editions held since 2000. The event is jointly administered by the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe.
