The Intercontinental Cup, officially the European/South American Cup and called the Toyota Cup after 1980, was a club football competition contested between the champions of Europe and South America from 1960 to 2004. Its two entrants were normally the winners of the European Champion Clubs' Cup, later the UEFA Champions League, and of the Copa Libertadores. UEFA and CONMEBOL endorsed it, although FIFA did not organise it. Until 1979 it was played as a two-legged tie with a play-off if needed, and several editions were marred by violence or skipped by European champions. From 1980 it became a single match in Japan sponsored by Toyota. FIFA later recognised past winners as club world champions, and the FIFA Club World Cup succeeded the event.
