The Giro d'Italia, or Tour of Italy, is an annual multiple-stage road cycling race primarily held in Italy. The first race was organized in 1909 to increase sales of the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, and it has been held every year since except during the two world wars. It is a UCI World Tour event and one of professional cycling's three-week Grand Tours, second in importance to the Tour de France. It is usually held in May, with at least two time trials and a passage through the Alps, including the Dolomites. The overall leader wears the pink jersey, and separate classifications reward sprinters, climbers, young riders and teams.
