The Copa Libertadores, formally the CONMEBOL Libertadores and also called the Copa Libertadores de America, is the annual club football championship of South America, organised by CONMEBOL since 1960. It is the highest level of South American club football and is named after the liberators of the Spanish American wars of independence. Early editions admitted only national champions; later ones added runners-up, Mexican guests, a 32-team group stage and extra qualifying rounds. The present format has group stages followed by knockout rounds ending in a November final, and the winner qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup. Argentine and Brazilian clubs have each won twenty-five titles, and Independiente holds the record with seven.
