The AFC Asian Cup is the main association football competition for the senior men's national teams of the members of the Asian Football Confederation, and it decides the continental champion of Asia. It is the second-oldest continental football championship in the world after Copa América. The first tournament was held in Hong Kong in 1956, and the competition ran every four years until the 2004 tournament in China, after which the AFC moved it to a less crowded cycle, held it in 2007 in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, and has since kept the four-year rhythm. Japan has won four times, Iran and Saudi Arabia three times each, and South Korea and Qatar twice each. Australia joined the confederation in 2007 and won on home soil in 2015, and from 2019 the field grew from 16 to 24 teams, with qualifying doubling as part of FIFA World Cup qualification.
