Annelise Coberger

Winter Sports

Annelise Coberger is a New Zealand alpine skier who won the silver medal in the women's slalom at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Méribel, the first Winter Olympic medal won by any representative of a Southern Hemisphere country. She was born on 16 September 1971 in Christchurch, Canterbury, and skied for the Porter Heights club. Her family were pioneers of skiing in New Zealand, and her German grandfather established one of the first ski equipment businesses in the country. She took slalom bronze at the 1990 World Junior Championship, won a World Cup slalom at Hinterstoder in January 1992, and finished second in the 2002-03 World Cup slalom standings. She did not finish the first run at the 1994 Winter Games, and she retired in 2005 to study at Otago University before joining the New Zealand Police.
