Ian Porterfield (1946 to 2007) was a Scottish professional footballer who became a well travelled football coach, working at club and international level for almost thirty years. As a player he is remembered above all for scoring the only goal of the 1973 FA Cup final, which gave Sunderland a surprise victory over a Leeds United side regarded as one of the best in Europe. He was born in Dunfermline, began with Raith Rovers, moved to Sunderland in 1967 and later played for Reading on loan and Sheffield Wednesday. As a manager he led Rotherham United, Sheffield United, Aberdeen, Reading and Chelsea, and at Chelsea he became the first manager dismissed in the Premier League era. He also coached the national teams of Zambia, Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, Oman, Trinidad and Tobago and Armenia, finishing second with Zambia at the 1994 African Nations Cup and winning the Caribbean Cup with Trinidad and Tobago in 2001. He died of colon cancer in September 2007 while in charge of Armenia.
