Viktor Vladimirovich Ponedelnik, born on 22 May 1937 and died on 5 December 2020, was a Russian footballer and manager who played for the Soviet Union national team. He began with the local team Rostselmash in 1956 and moved to SKA Rostov-on-Don in 1958, when he was invited to join the national side. At the 1960 European Championship, the only major championship the Soviet Union ever won, he headed home the winning goal in extra time of the final against Yugoslavia. He retired in 1966 after gaining weight and undergoing surgery for appendicitis, having scored 20 goals in 29 games for his country by most accounts. In later life he worked as a coach, a sports journalist and an editor of a sports weekly, advised the President of the Russian Federation, and wrote several books about football. He was the last surviving member of the winning 1960 squad.
