FAQs

Why did Alberto Tomba's powerful build suit slalom and giant slalom racing?

His power let him take a faster line through the newer spring-loaded gates.

At 182 cm and 90 kg, Tomba had a powerful build that contrasted with the lighter, more traditional technical skiers, who prioritised agility over muscle. He took advantage of the spring-loaded ski gates that replaced the older solid gates in the early 1980s, using his power to hold a faster and more direct line through the course.
