Why was Nigel Mansell called Red Five?
His car carried a red number 5 at Williams.
The name comes from his car number. When Mansell joined Williams in 1985 his car was allocated number 5. For the first four races of that season both Williams cars had white numbers, and from a distance the numerals 5 and 6 resembled each other, so his car was given a red number to make it more distinctive. BBC Formula One commentator Murray Walker began describing the car as Red Five, and Mansell kept the red number throughout his first spell at Williams. He raced as Red Five again when he returned to the team in 1991.
